AFC North

The Cleveland Browns who currently play in the AFC North Division of the NFL were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the short lived All-America Football Conference (AAFL), a conference they dominated in their early days. The AAFL only lasted four seasons finishing in 1949 and Cleveland won all the divisional titles with a combined record of 52-4-3. This unparalleled success included winning all their games in the 1948 season, a feat only matched by the 1972 Miami Dolphins in NFL history.

In 1950 Cleveland along with the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts joined the NFL and the Browns opened the 1950 season with a 35-10 victory over the defending NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles on their way to winning the title. Their domination continues as they won the NFL Eastern Conference championship six times in a row from 1950 to 1955 and added two more NFL titles in 1954, 1955 and finished runners up four times in 1951-53 &1957.

Success was a little harder to come by there after and the Cleveland Browns won their last NFL championship in 1964, when they defeated the Baltimore Colts, 27-0.

Since then they have been a fairly consistent franchise reaching the playoffs on many occasions but they have never managed to reach the Super Bowl the closest they came was when losing to the Baltimore Colts in the 1969 championship game so missing out on appearing in Super Bowl III.

Due to the relocation of the original franchise with the advent of the Baltimore Ravens in 1996 the Cleveland Browns didn’t compete in the NFL for three seasons between 1996 and 1998 returning as an expansion team in the 1999 season but retaining their original name and history. They have struggled to recapture their success of old having only made the post season once since reforming but showed some positive signs towards the end of the 2009 season.
