NFC North
The Chicago Bears who play in the NFC North Division of the National Football League are one of the two charter members still in existence, the other being the Arizona Cardinals ironically also hailing from Chicago. They were originally formed in Decatur in 1919 but moved to Chicago in 1921 and as the Chicago Staleys won that years league championship. The following year the teams name changed to The Chicago Bears
They won the championship again in 1932 by beating the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 in what was the 1st ever indoor game. The next year they followed this up by beating the New York Giants, 23-21 and again played the Giants in 1934 but lost in that final 30-13.
In The 1940s the Bears enjoyed considerable success including four straight NFL championship appearances from 1940-1944 which included a 73-0 hammering of the Washington Redskins in 1940. They were to win 4 championships in the decade but in the 1950s success proved elusive and their next success was a 14-10 win over the New York Giants in 1963.
Since then Chicago have been a fairly regular playoff team with 13 post season appearances and of course won Super Bowl XX thanks in no small part to their legendary defence which shut out both the New York Giants and the LA Rams before crushing New England 46-10 in the final. They reached the Super Bowl for a second time in 2007, losing to the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 29-17
Many famous names have pulled on the Chicago shirt with none more famous than George Halas who in 1963 was one of the original 17 charter members of the Pro Football Hall of fame. Others who have followed include Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Sid Luckman, Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Bulldog Turner, and Danny Fortmann.
