I was surprised today by all the fuss surrounding the comments made by Clinton Portis about a female reporter, which seen completely innocuous. I must be mistaken in my belief that America is the land of free speech and given this is the statement that all the fuss is about it must be very difficult being a male member of the species over there.
I quote
“You know, somebody got to spark her interest, or she’s going to want somebody. I don’t know what kind of woman won’t, if you get to go and look at 53 men’s [bodies],” …”I know you’re doing a job, but at the same time, the same way I’m going to cut my eye if I see somebody worth talking to, I’m sure they do the same thing.”
This is Clinton Portis expressing an opinion, and given that women on the whole do find men attractive its hard to pick too many faults with his argument. A quick non scientific survey of a few women friends failed to find anyone who was offended by the remarks and the honest (single) ones admitted that getting the chance to be in a locker room with 53 NFL athletes was quite an appealing thought.
Hopefully the in future the NFL will concentrate on more important things than a Journalist who has spotted the opportunity for an extra 15 minutes of fame.
