Lions President Tom Lewand and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano teamed up for area youth on Thursday (April 7) evening by co-chairing the Wayne County Steak & Burger Dinner benefiting seven Boys & Girls Clubs in Wayne County. The event was held at UAW-GM Center for Human Resources in Detroit.
The dinner raised nearly $ 65,000 to benefit the six Wayne County Boys & Girls Clubs located in Detroit, Belleville, Romulus, and Highland Park, where more than 9,000 youth receive homework help and participate in sports and other after-school activities in a safe, educational and fun environment.
Several former Lions were in attendance including Hall of Famers Lem Barney and Charlie Sanders, as well as Alex Lewis, Ron Rice, Cory Schlesinger, Tommy Watkins and Dewayne White.
The dinner highlighted the accomplishments of some of the youth served in Wayne County who entertained the crowd with speeches, poetry and a dance routine. In an effort to keep priorities in order and carry on the tradition of the annual event, the adults ate eat burgers while kids dined on steaks.
