The new NFL season got underway properly last night and there were several interesting results, none bigger than Washington’s home win over the Dallas Cowboys. Ex Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was out to prove he has still got it and he put in a steady if unspectacular performance using Clinton Portis a lot and avoiding throwing any turnovers.
They were solidly out gunned through the air and on the ground and Dallas really only have themselves to blame for this defeat giving up 91 yards in penalties and making too many rudimentary mistakes. They will iron out these failing as the season progresses and should still come out above their NFC East rivals in the final reckoning.
New England produced a statement performance against the play off hopeful Cincinnati Bengals, with Wes Welker, showing no signs of game rust, catching two TDs. On this performance all the talk of the Patriots demise in the increasingly competative AFC East look well premature.
Other impressive performances included Green Bays hard fought victory in Philadelphia, who had to resort to using Michael Vick as QB and he finished with 11 carries for 103 yards. These stats against Green Bay would have pleased most running backs. The Packers look like they can live up to their preseason billing and if they stay healthy will go far in the post season.
The Houston Texans finally got the Colts “Monkey” off their back with a nice running performance which led to a 34-24 win. Shockingly the Texans didnt manage to break 100 yards passing, but their ground game looked impressive, all be it against the worst rush defense in the league.
