2011 NFL Draft Rounds 2 & 3 Patiots take a QB

The second and third rounds of the draft are now over and there was some good value floating around, most of which soon got snapped up.  We were a little surprised that the Patriots took Ras-I Dowling at 33 given Brandon Harris was still available, still Dowling is a good 4″ taller and they obviously thought the extra height and physical presence would suit their defensive strategy better. Their loss was the Texans possible gain and we were surprised at how far Harris was allowed to slip.

The Patriots traded out of their extra 2nd round pick and still managed to pick up QB Ryan Mallet in the third. This could prove to be a shrewd move, as Mallet has bags of potential and we saw him going late in the 1st round. They did pick up a running back in round 2 drafting Shane Vereen we are not to sure on this one and it looks like a bit of a luxury pick given he doesn’t look amazing value in round two and the Patriots are not glaringly short in this area. Time will tell on this one.

Both the Bengals and the 49ers have their QBs In Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick and given the uncertainty under centre in both franchises it would not be a huge surprise to see both feature in 2011.

Their fellow AFC North rivals Cleveland continued to have a good draft getting Jabaal Sheard at DE who should fit straight in to their planned 4-3 Defense in 2011 and in the South Tennessee filled a glaring hole taking Akeem Ayers at 39. Kyle Rudolph also looked like a value pick for the Vikings who will now have a bit of depth at TE.

However we feel the pick of the second round was Da’Quan Bowers who looks a steal bad knee or no bad knee at 51. Tampa could be a force to be reckoned with in the next few seasons if they keep building like this.
